Dear Kai,

We have just celebrated your 17th birthday and I thought this would be the best time to begin sharing my thoughts and experiences with you so that hopefully, you can better understand why I chose to move to Denmark 18 years ago.

Like so many Danish people who I have met throughout the years, you too have sometimes expressed disbelief that I would leave New York City — “the greatest city in the world” – in order to move to Denmark. Who does that? Many seem to think, when they hear where I am from. I hope to answer this question in this piece by looking at Ava DuVernay’s recently released documentary 13th. 13th examines, among other things, the relationship between race, the US criminal justice system and the prison industrial complex in the US. Like so many other Black people in the United States, these subjects have touched my life personally…
